1. Intro

Happy New Year! This is going to be short, because there isn't really all that much to say. I've actually been at a loss for things to watch on TV because everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, has been rerunning. Luckily, this week, we'll finally have some new stuff to look forward to, unless you're a big fan of the WB dramas, in which case everything is still in reruns.

I hope everyone had wonderful holidays. I went out to visit my parents in California and spent a day at Universal Studios in Hollywood with my cousins. I got to see lots of great old sets from movies and TV shows, as well as go on fun rides and eat one of the possibly worst burgers I've ever had in my entire life. There was a little booth in the park that was selling tickets to attend the filming of TV shows. My dream come true. Unfortunately, no shows start filming again until January 7th, and I had to be back in New York in time to spend New Years in the correct time zone, so I missed out. Perhaps I need to visit my parents more often....

So January arrives with all sorts of new shows to play with. NBC is filling their Friday night 8pm timeslot (vacated by "Trinity," which I think didn't get the chance it deserved) with a new show called Providence. It looks incredibly cheesy. It's by the same creator as "Touched by an Angel," which is definitely not one of my favorite shows, and is about a well-meaning plastic surgeon who leaves her practice in Los Angeles and moves back home to Providence, Rhode Island to be with her family. Her mother, who unexpectedly dies, watches over her in her dreams. Hmmm. Okay, so I'm going to give it a chance, but I'm not expecting much.

A show I AM looking forward to, however, is called "The PJs." It's a new animated show on FOX (as my friend Sam says, "Why is FOX like the animated channel?") and it stars Eddie Murphy. Eddie Murphy! Okay, so I'm a big fan of Eddie Murphy (although not of anything he's done recently). I'm really looking forward to having Eddie Murphy (even though it's only his voice) on TV. The show is "previewing" (whatever that means) this coming Sunday just after "The Simpsons" and before "The X-Files" but will then settle into a Tuesday 8:30pm timeslot following "King of the Hill." Check it out.

And last but not least (okay, maybe it is least), UPN, in their own quiet way, is heavily hyping the debut of "Dilbert." (The little sky-diving Dilbert and Dogbert in the middle of a scene of "DiResta" was a little much.) I think this actually has potential, even though it's on UPN. It looks to me as though UPN is fast becoming the nerd channel, since I predict that its two most popular shows are going to be "Dilbert" and "Star Trek: Voyager." I guess being the nerd channel is better than being no channel at all. Nerds are an important demographic, right? Now Apple and Microsoft and IBM will have the perfect place to put their ads. Okay, that was a big tangent. Now back to "Dilbert." My cousin commented that she was excited about the show until she heard Dilbert's voice in one of the promos. That's always a problem with taking cartoons and putting them on the air. Suddenly, millions of people who have been imagining Dilbert's voice in their heads have to contend with the real thing. I must say, the voice was okay for me. Then again, I've never been that huge a Dilbert fan. Anyway, support the lesser networks, watch Dilbert.

Other shows that are returning to the air in January are "The Magnificent Seven" and "Lateline," both of which I know very little about, but everyone I speak to about "Lateline" either loves it or hates it, so I might have to check it out and see why.

The new year also brings a new person to TKTV. I'd like to welcome Jen Oyama! Jen, who originally ran a "Party of Five" site that has since been folded into TKTV's "Party of Five" site, has taken over TKTV's "Felicity" site just in time for the Golden Globes. She's added graphics, lots of news tidbits, and a really neat trivia quiz already. Check it out and let her know what you think.

Enjoy the first newsletter of the New Year!

2. Letters from the viewing audience

First of all, I must apologize. It seems like my request for the viewing audience to write in about "Pensacola, Wings of Gold" for Nicola got cut off somehow. Luckily, I think I got the idea across.

For Nicola from James:
Having watched it, and a lot in the genre, I'll comment. It's not a bad show. If you liked "Top Gun" and/or "Delta Force," you'd probably enjoy it. A bunch of naval aviators and marines from the Pensacola Naval Air Station fight evil at home and abroad. Lots of pretty shots of the cool toys our taxes buy racing across the sky, and a number of implausibly handsome/beautiful people running around with automatic weapons. Overall, it ain't "Citizen Kane," but there are worse ways to spend an hour. As to James Brolin, Nicola will probably be pleased, there are frequent shots of him looking ruggedly handsome.
From Daphne:
My boss went down the waterslide with Felicity at last week's opening of the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas.
From GRplutko:
I could not agree more about the ridiculous nomination for both Keri Russell and the show "Felicity." Half a season and it gets a nomination?!! This show was over-hyped from day one and still is. With all the talk about it you would think it could at least crack the top 90 from time to time in the ratings, but it is not even close to being the top rated show on the WB network! There are numerous other shows that should have been nominated ahead of "Felicity:" "NYPD Blue," "Chicago Hope," "Party of Five," etc.... the list could go on.
From Jess0147:
I also had a comment about the Rugrats Chanukkah special. My little sister was very confused over the past week. She loves the Rugrats & watched the Chanukkah special. Then, a few days later there was a Christmas special. I thought the Rugrats were Jewish?!?!?!

I was very surprised when Mad About You (as well as the cast) did not receive any Golden Globe Nominations. Everyone knows that this is MAY's last year so one would think that Paul Reiser, Helen Hunt, or the show itself would get a nomination, right??

(Note from TK: all the critics pretty much agree that this has been MAY's worst season, and for once, I agree with them. So although it might be nice to give them some sort of lifetime achievement award (for the lifetime of the show, not THEIR lifetime), I'd be a little bitter if they were nominated for a regular award just because they were ending. That would be like giving Roseanne an award for her last season on the air which was so bad that it almost ruined all the earlier seasons for me.)
From Cristobel:
I really hate the fact that I read your newsletters way after I receive them (today being the exception). It's not because I'm behind on TV, since I'm WAY behind on that (like 26 years), but because I'm behind on people's responses. I think something, and then read the next one and see someone else has just said the same thing.... (like, "I LOVE driving my VW!" I don't have one, but I drive one a lot, and I always pretend I'm Mario Andretti, because the car lets you drive it like that, unlike my ancient BMW, whose wheels will move while the body of the car stays exactly where it was, burning rubber...)

Anyway, I loved Shane's "too much TV" essay. Very personal, but fabulous. I always feel like people pity me a little because I've never watched TV (much). They don't look at me the way my mother thought they would and think "Oh, what a strong, intelligent person she must be! She never watched TV! I bet her brain hasn't rotted and is in tip-top shape!" They say things like, "Did you live in a bubble?" or, "You don't know who THE WALTONS are!?!?" I feel like I've missed out on a major part of my generation's culture, never mind that I have certain excrutiating and silent moments when I can't make cocktail-party talk because I have no idea what the Beverly Hillbillies did or what Greenacres is or where Petticoat Junction is or who Got Smart or whatever (in fact, to write that sentence, I needed my boyfriend's assistance). So I guess I defend Shane's position, and when we do marry/conceive etc., our kids can watch TV together, just maybe not TOO much. Maybe we can teach our kids how to watch television responsibly and in moderation, just like drinking and everything else?

So thanks for the newsletter. I wish you had a lending library of tapes you've got of TV shows. I could like catch up over vacation the way you do when you're in school and you get behind on that lengthy James Joyce story...
From Rob:
I actually DID watch something on TV this month - I heard about and caught a very different and exciting version of "It's a Wonderful Life" on PBS - it was done as a reading, by a group of actors (mostly, well, actually, probably all chosen for their current popularity) in front of mics.

There were probably some script adaptations (I'm sure there were - the angel [CLARENCE?] was instructed and conveniently provided a good deal of narration & exposition in ways that implied to me descriptions of visual scenes in the film).

The cast included Alec Baldwin, Bernadette Peters, and Nathan Lane... but despite the fact that it was a bit of a star-f**ker of a show, it was actually really absorbing.

It's nice to see someone take a production that's been done to death and give it a new examination.

3. TV Ramblings

I find it a little ironic that in the last episode of "Conrad Bloom" I saw, Conrad was telling Molly how great everything was going and how wonderful his life is, and Molly warned him that he shouldn't tempt the fates like that, because now something horrible was sure to happen to him. The show has been cancelled.

What a shame that "Fantasy Island" is starting to get better now that it's been cancelled and is just running out the remaining episodes. In Dec. 26th's episode, they had a great flashback scene, where Roarke was remembering when a baby washed up on shore that he saved, and he was wearing the old white suit that Ricardo Montalban used to wear in the original series. The writers are just starting to explore some of the characters' backgrounds, and now we'll never know who they really are....

4. All fired up about the Golden Globes by Caralyn Gilotti

I don't know why this happens to me sometimes, but I am DAMN fired up about the Golden Globe Nominations. They're not the Emmys or Oscars, but the all-encompassing Globe show has definitely gained significant prestige in the last few years. Maybe that's why the all-too-prevalent bogus nominations have me in such a tizzy.

I could NOT agree with you more about Keri Russell/Felicity's nods. I mean, it's an okay show, but save the nomination for a more deserving actress - or at least one who doesn't show up so regularly on those putrid Lifetime teen pregnancy/affair with an older married man/steal your best friends boyfriend cheesefests. Who should have nabbed her place? Not so sure, but I'd vote for Lara Flynn Boyle over Russell any day.

Further handshakes on your take on "Just Shoot Me". Not an awful show, but David Spade couldn't carry SNL alone, either. In my reminscent of high school bong hits opinion, a better vote for funny is "That 70's Show." Love the spinning pot cam. And have you seen the episode where the wallpaper moves? A nail's head couldn't have been hit any more rightly.

Do I agree with any of the choices? I still have some faith in the powers that nominate - Dharma & Greg/Jenna Elfman/Thos Gibson's noms; "Gia's" multiple acknows; Jane Krakowski, who remains the freshest gimmicky element of "Ally" (enough with the hallucinations already); & Christina Applegates recog - the show's tepid, but with better writers, she could go far.

By the way, is the "Party" over? Do they really think "Felicity" even comes close?

(Note from TK: I can't believe I forgot "That '70's Show!" Oh, the wonders of the spinning pot-cam. It makes me reminiscent for a time that I wasn't old enough to appreciate. That would have been a great nomination....)
